“The Art of Photogravure” exhibition in NYC

By | Jonathan Higgins, Philip Van Keuren, photogravure | No Comments

An exhibition of photogravure prints highlighting the work of four photographers and their master printers opens this week in New York City.

A new group show, The Art of Photogravure, opens at 1251 Avenue of the Americas, NYC, on April 18. In this unique presentation, the gallery celebrates the photogravure prints of four internationally renowned photographers: Roy DeCarava, Lee Freidlander, Philip Van Keuren and Kenro Izu, and their collaborators: master print makers Jonathan Higgins (Manneken Press), Lothar Osterburg (LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies) and Paul Taylor (Renaissance Press).

The photogravure method of making hand-pulled prints has attracted photographers to intaglio print-making since the 19th century. It is considered by many to be one of the finest methods of reproducing photographic images in ink on paper. Combining the realistic detail of a photograph and the richly pigmented inks typical of a fine art print, photogravure etchings make a special impression, an unparalleled visual experience.

The Art of Photogravure, April 18 – July 18 is presented by RCSFA, MFA and Hines for 1251 Avenue of the Americas, New York, 10021. The gallery is in the lobby of 1251 Avenue of the Americas, 49th & 6th Avenue. It is open to the pubic M-F: 7 a.m. -7 p.m.
