Just Above Midtown: Changing Spaces

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

Manneken Press was pleased to loan two prints by Peter Feldstein to Just Above Midtown: Changing Spaces, presented at The Museum of Modern Art from October 9, 2022, to February 18, 2023.

The exhibition examined the legacy of Just Above Midtown (JAM), the New York–based gallery and experimental “laboratory” founded and led by Linda Goode Bryant. Active from 1974 to 1986, JAM foregrounded African American artists and artists of color, fostering a space where Black art, abstraction, and critical discourse flourished.

Feldstein participated in several JAM group exhibitions, and his abstract photographic work aligned closely with the gallery’s emphasis on experimentation, abstraction, and the use of modest, accessible materials. The two works included in the MoMA exhibition are photogravures derived from small handmade negatives.

These prints were produced in 1998 in collaboration with Jonathan Higgins of Manneken Press and were printed and published by Galamander Press, New York, a forerunner of Manneken Press.
