A new series of mixed-media monotypes by Carlos Andrade.
Artist Carlos Andrade arrived at Manneken Press from his home in Cali, Colombia, just a few days after our return from the E/AB Fair. I have worked with Carlos at Manneken Press on several different monotype projects since 2009, and we were printing together as early as 1996 in my studio in New York. Carlos has always been interested in using vernacular materials in his paintings sculptures and installations, and we have previously incorporated materials such as color-xerox copies, printed religious ephemera, and synthetic meshes and fabrics into his prints. This time he arrived at Manneken Press with a bagful of festones, the colorful plastic triangular flags which are strung up in strands for street festivals in Central and South America, wanting to use them in his prints. He had flags in an array of transparent colors, which when overlapped, created interesting new colors.
After spending a day adhering the festones, with their strings still attached, to paper we had about 12 sheets to work with, ranging in size from 30″ x 22″ to 60″ x 44″. We spent the rest of the week printing and creating a new series of wonderfully textured, unusual and very typically “Andrade” monotypes. Once the prints are dry and have been documented we will add them to the website.
